How to Make a Three Musketeer Costume

Save

Three Musketeers is more than just a candy bar. The name comes from the title of a novel that was written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas. The story involves a young man named D'Artagnan, and his three friends, the titular three musketeers. The book has been made into a number of films over the years and is noted for the characters' use of swords rather than their use of muskets. A musketeer costume requires only three items to be recognizable: a sword,a uniform tabard and hat.

Things You'll Need

  • Royal blue long-sleeved T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Silver blanket binding
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Silver cross applique
  • Needle
  • Silver thread
  • Black wide-brimmed felt cowboy hat
  • Saucepan
  • Feathers
  • Select a large blue T-shirt with long, wide sleeves. The hem of the shirt should hang to mid-thigh on the wearer and be about two sizes too big.

  • Cut a slit from the armpit of the shirt down to the cuff of the sleeve on the underside. Cut a second slit from the armpit to the shirt hem on the same side. Cut two identical slits in the other side of the shirt. The shirt must be royal blue, the official color of the musketeer uniform.

  • Pin silver blanket binding along all sides of the T-shirt. Stitch the binding to the shirt using a straight stitch on a sewing machine.

  • Pin an applique silver cross to the front of the T-shirt. Hand-stitch the cross in place with a needle and thread.

  • Fill a saucepan with water. Boil the water until it steams. Hold a felt cowboy hat in the steam until the hat becomes pliable. Pin the side of the hat up to resemble the traditional musketeer hat. The hat will stiffen as it dries. Stick feathers into the brim of the hat where it folds up.
