How to Train for the American Citizenship Test
The process for naturalization United States citizenship involves individuals to pass a speaking test, reading test, writing test and civics test. The later of the four tests, the civics test, is often referred to as the United States citizenship test and is comprised of 100 possible questions on life in the United States. Test takers will be asked a random selection of 10 of these questions and must answer at least 6 correctly to pass the test. There are several practice tests and study materials provided by the U.S. government to help applicants prepare.

Go to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website and click on the "Learners" tab. This will take you to information on citizenship that is specifically provided for people preparing for the naturalization tests.

Click on the "Study for the Test" link and read about the various types of tests involved in the naturalization process.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the "Study Materials for the Civics Test" link underneath the "Study Tools" section.

Download the video, audio and text publications that are offered by the U.S. government as study tools for the civics test. These include: a short video overview of the naturalization interview and test process; a video titled "A Promise of Freedom" that covers U.S. history and the rights and responsibilities of citizens; civics test flash cards; a study booklet; a link to a "Naturalization Self Test"; and the 100 possible test questions in print or auditory form. The audio version of the test questions can be downloaded in English or Spanish.

Watch the videos, read the booklet and study the 100 questions until you have memorized every answer. Have a friend help you by asking the questions so you cannot look at the answers. Take the online "Naturalization Self Test" as many times as it takes until you feel confident with the information.
