How to Replace a 300ZX CV Boot

How to Replace a 300ZX CV Boot thumbnail
The CV boots protect the CV joints, which transmit rotary motion from the drive shaft to the wheels.

The CV boot on your Nissan 300ZX is a rubber boot that protects the constant-velocity joints on your drive shaft. The CV joints transmit rotary power from the drive shaft to the wheels. When the CV boot is damaged, the CV joints accrue a buildup of dirt and debris. To prevent long-term damage to the CV joints, it is a good idea to check the CV boots regularly. If they need replacing, the procedure to do so is easy enough to perform yourself, which will save you money.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable using a ratchet and socket. Raise the front of the car using a jack. Allow the car to rest on jack stands, then remove the front wheels using a tire tool.

    • 2

Pull the center hub nut retaining pin out with pliers. Unbolt the center hub nut and the two bolts that attach the strut to the spindle using and a ratchet and socket. Wrap the ABS cable around the strut to protect it.

    • 3

Remove the brake line clip from the strut with pliers, then pull the brake line from the strut with your hands. Unbolt the strut using a ratchet and socket.

    • 4

Remove the spindle from the strut mount by prying it out with a flathead screwdriver. Slide the brake hose under the strut and lightly tap the end of the strut with a rubber mallet until it recedes into its shaft.

    • 5

Climb into the cab and turn the steering wheel left if working on the right axle, or right if working on the left axle.

    • 6

Pull the axle out of the spindle. Rotate the axle so the retainers of the CV boot holding clamps are pointing upward, then thread the hub nut back onto the shaft.

    • 7

Hammer the lip of the CV boot with the rubber mallet until it slips off and remove any pieces of the CV boot from the axle with a pocket knife. Wipe the axle clean with a rag. Fill the new CV boot with grease and install it by following the previous steps in reverse.
