How to Use Restaurant Management Experience in Other Sectors
At times, economic conditions -- especially during times when a country's economic recovery is sluggish -- require people to be more flexible with their career objectives in order to stay employed. It becomes imperative for people to market themselves across various sectors outside their natural realm. So if you have restaurant management experience, then it behooves you to adopt a cross-functional resume that makes you more attractive to nonrestaurant businesses and industries.
In December 2010, in the United States, total payroll increased by 103,000 jobs. As more jobs become available, more experienced workers begin applying for them. However, recruiters sift through thousands of resumes and only interview a select few. Whether you are looking to change careers or utilize your work experience while between jobs, making your restaurant management experience relevant in other sectors will make you a desirable candidate.

1
Write a first-person narrative of your restaurant management experience. Pretend you are telling a friend or family member what tasks and responsibilities you had every day, as well as what accomplishments you contributed to the restaurant. Generalize your achievements so that nonrestaurant recruiters understand. For example, if you reduced food costs by 4 percent, then you reduced "overhead" by 4 percent.
-
2
Convert your narrative into a functional resume. Follow a template to assist you with layout issues and organization. Break your work experience into functional categories such as team leader, "performance booster" or any other category that best describes your skills. List three concrete examples that demonstrate your capabilities and talents.

3
Read the job description for the posted position carefully. Look for specific responsibilities and requirements. Identify potentially overlapping duties and qualifications between your restaurant management experience and the advertised job. For example, if you have experience leading a team of seven waiters, then you have experience leading a small group, performing status checks and conducting meetings.
-
4
Translate your qualifications for the recruiter. Recruiters spend too much time sifting through resumes to ask themselves how a candidate's experience could apply to the position. Your resume gets set aside if it does not show the recruiter that your experience qualifies you for the position immediately.
