How to Estimate Ceramic Tile
Installing tile in your home allows you to make significant changes to just about any room in your house. Ceramic tile has a wide range of use, including countertops, floors and walls. Estimate the number of tiles you need before installation by taking some measurements. Two ceramic tile measurements are necessary: the field and trim. Field tiles represent the main area, such as the floor. Trim tiles go around the field tile area to protect corners and add a dimensional look to the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Field Tile Measurements
-
1
Sketch the area where you will be laying tile. Mark measurable squares or rectangles for the area to ensure accurate measurements.
-
2
Measure the length and width for each area sketched. Multiply the length by the width for each area to get the total square feet.
-
-
3
Add all the square feet numbers together. Include an additional 10 percent to this figure to account for cut tiles or wasted material.
-
4
Divide the figure from Step 3 by the total square feet listed on boxes of tile. This gives you an idea of how much field tile needed for the project.
Trim Tile Measurements
-
5
Measure the length around the entire area you desire to tile.
-
6
Sum all length figures.
-
7
Add 15 percent to this figure to account for cut tiles or wasted material.
