How to Remodel a Basement Bar

Time was, every basement rec room had a bar. If you're one of those homeowners who has an original basement bar, you might have been thinking about tearing it out. But why not remodel it instead? Although drinking and entertaining styles may have changed over the years, a bar can still be a gathering place for friends and family.

Instructions

1. Decide on the look you want for your basement bar. Do you want it to look like a traditional Irish pub, or is your style more contemporary? Having a specific look in mind will help you figure out the design of your bar and the materials you will need.

2. Replace your bar's sink with a newer model, and update the appliances, such as the refrigerator and microwave. Because drinking habits have changed since the 1960s and '70s, consider adding a wine cooler.

3. Install new cabinets and shelving, or redo the ones that you have. Most home bars have base cabinets for storage and wall cabinets to accommodate barware. Carefully measure the space to determine the sizes that you need. Try to purchase kitchen cabinets in standard dimensions, or hire a carpenter to create custom cabinets. If the cabinets you have are in relatively good shape, restain or repaint them.

   If you are going for a more contemporary look, consider open glass shelving instead of wall cabinets.

4. Replace the countertop. Many bars built years ago have laminate countertops. Although granite can be expensive, a granite countertop will add value and style. If you just can't spend that much money, consider tile or laminate. Stainless steel and hammered copper are other possibilities. Add a new backsplash that complements the countertop and the cabinets.

5. Purchase new furniture. Bar stools are available in a range of styles. Decide if you want cloth or leather upholstery, and whether they should be simple stools or have backs. Let the look of your bar guide your selections.

6. Replace your light fixtures. Lighting is important so that you can see what you're doing. But it also creates a sense of drama. Hang pendant fixtures above the the bar, or install recessed lights that you can adjust. If you have glass shelving, consider special display lighting.

Tips & Warnings

• Re-evaluate the configuration of your bar. It can be a straight line, L-shaped or U-shaped to promote conversation.

• Install wall-mounted speakers and hook them up to a sound system to provide background music.

• Decorative items for your home bar may include candles and framed posters or art.

• A way to visually expand the space is to line the wall behind the bar with mirrors.
