How to Rate Energy-Efficient Air Conditioners

Energy-efficient air conditioners reduce utility bills when they're properly installed.

Air conditioning and heating costs account for almost half of what the average American family spends on home energy, according to federal Energy Star program. If you are looking for a new air conditioner, consider an energy-efficient product. Although the upfront cost may be higher than what you would pay for a less-efficient model, long-term savings will compensate. An energy-efficient model is also better for the environment, because it reduces emissions of carbon dioxide.

Instructions

1. Assess your home air-conditioning needs. Factors that may influence which type of air conditioner is best for you include the climate where you live, personal preferences and the size of your home.

2. Research the types of energy-efficient air conditioners that are available. For maximum efficiency, stick with Energy Star-certified products. These models are guaranteed to save you money on energy bills and benefit the environment.

3. Compare the seasonal energy efficiency ratio and the energy efficiency ratio of each model that you consider. SEER measures usage of a product in the average U.S. climate, compared with overall energy use. EER measures overall cooling capacity. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy recommends a SEER of at least 14.5 and an EER of at least 11.6.

4. Consult with a contractor, who can give you his opinion about the best air conditioning system for your home. The Air Conditioning Contractors of America provides an online database of certified contractors. Specify that you are interested in energy-efficient air conditioning systems when you meet with the contractor. Because improper installation may decrease energy savings, Energy Star and the ACEEE recommend having a new air conditioning system professionally installed.
