How to Maintain Pond Filters

Pond filters are an integral part of keeping a backyard pond clean and fit for enjoyment. They are hardworking, filtering toxins out of the entire body of water at least once, if not twice, every hour. Filters are either gravity-fed or work with a pump, and they come in dozens of mechanical designs. While a filter reduces some maintenance chores, it also introduces others. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the filter of algae, replace cracked or bent tubes and test the output for water quality. This is basic maintenance that should be done regularly to keep the system working.

    • 2

Move the filter to the proper place if it becomes dislodged. The filter should be above the water, with the purified water draining back into the pool from the top.

    • 3

Replace any charcoal or carbon once a month to prevent it from becoming worn out and letting toxins into the pond.

    • 4

Replace in the spring any biological filters, if you turn the system off over the winter season.
