Fire extinguishers are designed to smother small fires.

Dry chemical fire extinguishers are the first line of fire defense in your home or business. Keeping extinguishers in key areas for an emergency may allow you to get out of your home during a fire emergency or even to extinguish a fire entirely. Most Kidde dry chemical fire extinguishers are equipped with pressure gauges. Inspect your fire extinguishers' pressure gauges on a monthly basis to ensure the fire extinguishers will work when they are needed. Follow the "PASS" system recommended by Kidde and the National Fire Protection Association. PASS stands for "Pull," "Aim," "Squeeze" and "Sweep." Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the pin on top of the fire extinguisher valve handle. Stand 6 to 8 feet away from the fire, if possible.

    • 2

Aim the nozzle away from your body and toward the base of the fire.

    • 3

Squeeze the handle slowly to discharge the fire extinguishing chemical. When the material first hits the fire it may flare up; keep aiming low at the base of the flames.

    • 4

Sweep the dry chemical from side to side at the base of the fire. Slowly move toward the fire as the flames subside. Use the entire contents of the dry chemical fire extinguisher.
