How to Remove a Forklift Key

A forklift can be a deadly piece of equipment if misused.

Only authorized personnel should be allowed to remove the key from a forklift. Many avoidable accidents take place every year because of unattended forklifts. An unauthorized person unqualified to drive a forklift should never attempt to start and drive one. You must remove the key whenever a certified forklift driver will be more than 25 feet away from the vehicle. This safe practice ensures the vehicle remains immovable until the rightful driver returns. A forklift key works just like the ignition key of a car or truck.

Instructions

1. Lower the forklift forks all the way to the floor by pulling the appropriate lever forward.

2. Set the forklift parking brake.

3. Turn the forklift key to the left to shut off the engine.

4. Pinch the key between your thumb and pointer finger. Pull it from the ignition.

5. Keep the key in a secure place where unauthorized personnel cannot access it. A key lock box would be suitable.
