A lawn mower is only as good as its cutting blade is sharp. Even with normal use, lawn mower blades can quickly become dull and require resharpening. This is especially true of large, heavy-duty mowers like those manufactured by Scag Power Equipment, which are designed to cut large areas of grass on varied terrain. When the time comes to sharpen a Scag blade, it can be done with the right tools and the proper technique. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Scag mower
  • Work gloves
  • 2 wheel chocks
  • Automotive jack
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Metal file
  • Vise

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off a Scag mower and remove the key from the ignition if the model has a key.

      Put on the work gloves.

    • 3

      Put a wheel chock behind each of the mower's rear wheels.

      Raise the front end of the mower with an automotive jack until the blade is accessible.

      Hold the blade in place at the center, away from the sharpened edges, and loosen the nut holding the blade in place with an adjustable wrench.

      Remove the nut and washers and slide the blade off the rod.

      Place the blade in a vise so that one of the sharpened blade edges is facing upward. Tighten the vise to secure the blade in place.

      Dress the blade by sliding a metal file along the blade at approximately 30 degrees. Start the stroke a few inches from the beginning of the sharpened edge and work toward the end of the blade in long, smooth strokes. When the edge is sharp, repeat this process with the remaining cutting edge on the opposite side of the blade.

      Slide the sharpened blade back into place underneath the mower and replace the washers and nut.

      Hold the blade by at its middle, away from the sharpened edges, and tighten down the nut with an adjustable wrench.

      Lower the automotive jack until the mower is back on the ground.

      Remove the wheel chocks from behind the mower's rear wheels.
