How to Tell the Sex of My Baby

How to Tell the Sex of My Baby thumbnail
If you are expecting a baby, you can get a ultrasound to determine the sex.

The ultrasound exam uses high-frequency sound waves to create a sonogram image of the baby in the mother's uterus. If you are curious about the sex of your baby, you can obtain a ultrasound exam during the third trimester in order to observe the fetal features and movements. Depending on your doctor's office, you may even request a 3-D Ultrasound which generates depth in your search of the baby's gender.

Instructions

Call your doctor's office and schedule an appointment for a ultrasound exam. Some doctor's require you to receive permission directly from them before a ultrasound can be performed.

    • 2

Ask the technologist to reveal the sex of the baby on the ultrasound screen. This may take time as the technologist must position the uterus so he can get a clear image of the baby's reproductive parts. Once he has a clear image, he will take a snapshot of the image for you to see.

Determine if it is a boy or a girl. Boys will have a small protrusion about 1 to 4 cm. in length between the legs depending on your period of pregnancy. Sometimes the protrusion can be mistaken for the umbilical cord, which will be significantly longer and wider. The girl will show two small bumps close together between the legs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ultrasounds are most effective between 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy when the baby has become developing his or her reproductive organs.
