Electrical licenses in Illinois are administered at the city level.

Illinois state law has no provision for licensure of electricians. But many cities in Illinois, including Chicago, have adopted laws requiring local licensure for persons doing electrical work within city limits. Though specific requirements vary by city, most demand significant on-the-job experience prior to licensure. Some require passing of an exam as well. To obtain an electrical license in your Illinois city, first identify the local regulatory body in charge of licensing.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your city's electrical trades regulator and inquire about electrical licensing. Often, the regulator is housed in an office within the city's Building Department. If you have trouble locating the appropriate office, visit City Hall and ask for directions.

    • 2

Obtain an electrical license application packet. Read through it to familiarize yourself with the requirements and procedures.

    • 3

Enroll in an electrician apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job experience with classroom instruction to provide you a comprehensive foundation of electrical theory and practical skill. You will work under the direct supervision of qualified electricians, and you will be paid for your work. The Illinois Department of Economic Security (IDES) maintains Apprenticeship Information Centers where representatives can help you locate an approved apprenticeship program in your area. IDES offices are located in cities across Illinois.

    • 4

Complete your apprenticeship program and obtain a completion certificate. Determine whether you have enough experience to qualify for licensure in your city. Often, completion of an apprenticeship program will meet such requirements. However, if you have not yet met the minimum qualifications for experience, continue working under a licensed electrician.

    • 5

Complete your city's licensing application. Generally, you must obtain signed affidavits from your employer(s) attesting to your experience and qualifications. You may be required to include your apprenticeship certificate of completion. Other requirements vary by city.

    • 6

Submit your application, along with supplementary documents and any required fees, to the indicated address.

    • 7

Schedule, take and pass a licensing exam, if required.

    • 8

Complete any remaining licensing requirements. You may have to obtain insurance, for example. Soon thereafter, according to local procedure, you will be issued an electrical license.
