How to Make Straight Pants


Straight pants are pants that are tailored to the leg but are not tight at the ankles like a skinny pant. Instead, it contours to the leg and fits well at the top. It has a slightly wider ankle at the bottom, creating a straight line, but there is no flare at the bottom like a boot cut or bell bottom pant.

  • Measure the legs. Measure the outside of the leg from waist to the same point. Measure around the waist, high hip or start of the hip, and hip at the widest point. Measure from the waist to the crotch and measure around the thickest part of the thigh and the knee. The key to perfectly fitted pants is measurements.

  • Select a straight pant pattern that fits to the hip measurement. Leg measurements can alter, but too little fabric at the hip is hard to fix later. Patterns usually have three sizes available and measurements on the back to determine the appropriate size.

  • Match the pattern to the appropriate measurements. Some alterations might be necessary. For example, if the hip at the widest point is larger than the standard sizing for the waist measurement, make adjustments. Place the pattern paper over the fabric according to the pattern directions. Usually, the pattern will need to have two pieces for each part of the pattern. To get two pieces of fabric, fold the fabric in half and place the pattern over the fabric so it can cut through both fabrics at the same time.

  • Cut the fabric according to the pattern. If there are little triangles on the pattern, cut from the outer edge of the fabric into the end of the triangle.

  • Follow the pattern directions to sew the pieces in order. The pattern should have the inside of the fabric sewn together at either ¼-inch or ½-inch seams. Use the sewing machine to quickly sew up the sides in an even stitch. A straight pant will usually sew in straight lines and seams down the length of the pant.

  • Try on the pants to make sure they fit . Put in any buttons, zippers or elastic as preferred for the pattern and design.
