How to Make Small Fractions in InDesign

When you import text into Adobe InDesign, a professional page layout application, small fractions in the document do not convert properly. Some font sets, such as the OpenType fonts included with the application, include common fractions in a small, diagonal form. A fraction that uses any number of your choice is an arbitrary fraction. You can create arbitrary fractions in InDesign using many OpenType fonts, including Adobe Garamond Pro, Cronos Pro, Adobe Casion Pro and Minion Pro.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the numerals to appear on the top of the fraction, type a forward slash and then type the numerals to appear on the bottom of the fraction.

    • 2

Highlight the text by clicking and dragging the cursor.

    • 3

Choose an OpenType font from the typeface selection menu at the upper left corner of the screen. OpenType fonts have an "O" logo next to them.

    • 4

Click the "Quick Apply" icon, which is shaped like a lightning bolt, in the upper right corner of the screen.

    • 5

Type "fraction" in the text box. Click "Panel Menus:Character:OpenType>[Fractions]" to convert the selected text to a small fraction.
