DIY: Pavers
Pavers are a durable, attractive hardscape material that homeowners use for a number of do-it-yourself projects. Pavers are poured or carved bricks that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and natural colors. Laying your own paver patio or walkway using the dry method involves basic materials like sand and gravel, but doesn't require experience. - Tape measure
- Shovel
- Compactor machine or hand tamper
- Landscape fabric
- Stakes
- Wood or metal edging
- Gravel
- 2-by-4 board
- Sand, coarse and fine grain
- Rubber mallet
- Broom or brush

Measure the dimensions of the area where you plan to install pavers, and mark out the site with landscape paint. Call your utility company to make sure the site is not over any underground wires, and adjust your outline if necessary.

Excavate the site until the surface is 8 inches deep. Continue digging until the surface is below the frost line if your area is prone to freezing temperatures. Building the foundation below the frost line helps prevent frost heave damage to the pavers.

Compact the soil with a metal plate compactor or a hand tamper until the surface is flat and you don't leave footprints when you walk. Place landscape fabric over the surface and spike the corners to improve drainage and prevent weeds from growing.

Arrange wood or metal edging along the borders of your patio or walkway. Use metal stakes to secure the edging to the ground.

Pour a 6-inch layer of crushed stone over the landscape fabric and tamp the surface. If you are laying a patio or walkway near the house, the surface should slope away from the house 1/4 inch for every foot to ensure water won't run towards the home.

Spread a 1-inch layer of concrete dust or coarse sand over the gravel. Use a 2-by-4 to spread the gravel evenly. Moisten the sand when you are ready to set the stones.

Set your pavers, beginning at a corner of the walkway or patio. Work your way out, placing the pavers in rows or according to your chosen design. Leave 1/8 inch between each paver, and tap them with a rubber mallet to press them into the sand.

Dump fine-grained sand over the surface and use a broom or stiff brush to sweep it between the crevices. The sand adds cushioning as the stones settle into place.
