How to Wrap a Gift for Shabbat

How to Wrap a Gift for Shabbat thumbnail
Wrapping your Shabbat gift makes a lovely presentation.

Shabbat is a Jewish custom that is observed a few minutes before sunset on Friday and a few minutes after the appearance of the stars in the sky. It is a time for reflection on the week that has passed, a time for prayer and a time for eating and celebration. Gifts are not traditionally exchanged on Shabbat, but it is polite to bring something if you are invited to share Shabbat at a friend or family member's home. Candlesticks, Kiddush cups and challah cutting boards all make excellent Shabbat gifts that can be wrapped and brought to your Shabbat observance.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the price tag from your gift and set it on a clean table. Take your gift box and place your gift inside the box. Fill the empty space around your gift with crumpled tissue paper until it is secured in place. Close the lid on your box, and tape it shut with a single piece of clear tape.

    • 2

Unroll your wrapping paper on the table. Make sure you unroll enough to cover your box. Set your gift box on your wrapping paper. Position your box in middle of your wrapping paper. Make sure there is enough paper to wrap around your box, with a 4-inch overhang of paper on each end. With your pencil, mark where you will need to cut away the excess paper. Set aside your gift, and use your yardstick as a straight guide to cut off the excess paper. You now have the wrapping paper cut and ready for your Shabbat gift.

    • 3

Set the gift box top down in the center of the unprinted side of your wrapping paper. Lift the long edge of the wrapping paper to the center of the box and secure it with a small piece of clear tape. Turn the opposite edge of the paper under approximately a half inch, and bring this to the center of the box. It will slightly overlap your first edge. Tape it down with a small piece of clear tape.

    • 4

Rotate the gift box until you have the end with the overlap wrapping paper facing you. Take the top corners of the wrapping paper and push in the side. This will form the top and bottom flaps of your triangle fold. Use your scissor to cut away any excess paper that may prevent you from having a neat fold where the edges rest against the box. Tape the edges of your fold to the box with a piece of clear tape. You now have to triangle shaped flaps at the top and bottom of your box end. Bring the upper triangle flap down against the side of the box. Tape the flap to the box. Bring the lower triangle flap up against the side of the box. Tape the flap to the box. Repeat this step for the opposite side of the box. You now have a wrapped Shabbat gift.

Tips & Warnings

  • For an added flourish, tie a ribbon around the center of your box. Or you can purchase a self-adhesive ribbon at your local gift or drug store.

  • Be careful to wrap your gift in a clean area. Pet hair, dust or grime will adhere to the clear tape and make your gift unsightly
