How to Check a Doorbell

How to Check a Doorbell thumbnail
If your button does not connect properly, your doorbell won't ring.

If your doorbell doesn't ring properly, the problem may stem from the button, the transformer or the doorbell chime. You may need to repair the wiring or replace the component. The button triggers the doorbell, causing it to sound. The transformer converts your house's electricity into a low voltage that your doorbell can use. The doorbell chime makes the doorbell noise you hear when someone presses the button. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws holding your doorbell button's faceplace in place, and remove the faceplate and button. Examine the wires behind the faceplate. They may be damaged or loose.

    • 2

If the wires are tightly attached and undamaged, remove the wires and touch them to each other. If the doorbell rings when you touch the wires together, the doorbell button, also called a doorbell switch, is the culprit. If the doorbell didn't ring, or rang weakly, the transformer or chime is the problem.

    • 3

Find the doorbell transformer, usually hung near the house's main circuit box or in the basement in a spot below the entryway. Examine the wires attached to the transformer for damage or looseness.

    • 4

If the wires are undamaged and tightly connected, set your multimeter to 50V AC and touch the multimeter to the terminals attached to the wires leading from the transformer to the doorbell. These are the low voltage terminals. If the multimeter registers fewer than six volts or more than 16 volts, the transformer is the problem.

    • 5

If the multimeter registers between six and 16 volts, check the doorbell chime. Locate the doorbell chime mounted high on a wall, most likely on the first floor of the house. Remove the cover and examine the wires for damage or looseness.

    • 6

If the wires in the doorbell chime are undamaged and tightly attached, set your multimeter to 50V and touch it to the two wires coming into the chime from the transformer. If the multimeter registers between six and 16 volts, the doorbell chime is the problem. Otherwise, the wires connecting the transformer to the chime are causing the problem.
