How to Get Construction Materials Certified in New York State
In the state of New York, construction materials are approved prior to use by a quality control/quality assurance technician who has been certified by the New York Construction Materials Association. These individuals have been trained to understand a company's product and the quality of the material being used regarding factors such as durability and safety. Certification is achieved via laboratory performance and written test scores and is good for five years. Go to the New York Construction Materials Association website and download the QC/QA registration and information pamphlet. Read through the information and note on a calendar when the training and testing sessions will take place.

Write down where the certification program is being held. In the case of New York, there are usually two general locations, Alfred States College in Alfred, New York, and Advance Testing Company Inc. (ATC) in Campbell Hall, New York.

Write a check for the program fee. This fee varies based on your eligibility. In 2010, association members paid $605 at the Alfred location and $705 at the ATC location, NYSDOT employees paid the same as association members at each of the locations and nonmembers paid $905 at the Alfred location and $1,005 at the ATC location. Complete the program registration form, making sure to select your first three choices of dates for the two-day program. Enter your name, home address, social security number, the company your work for that the certification will need to be sent to and your personal contact information.

Mail the check and the registration form to The Research Foundation at the Center for Community Education and Training, Alfred State College, 10 Upper College Drive, Alfred, NY 14802.

Wait for your registration confirmation. This will most likely come via fax and should include your assigned program dates. Print this confirmation and take it with you to the program at your scheduled time.

Review the manual prior to beginning the program if possible. This will be made available to you as soon as your program registration fee has cleared. Call the organization to keep up with the status of your payment to take advantage of studying as early as possible.

Attend the program and take the tests administered there and then wait for your results. If you have passed, you will be issued a New York Construction Materials Association certification.

Be sure to study. Program fees are nonrefundable, and retests for the written exam are $100.
