How to Repair the Speedometer in a 1985 Lincoln Mark VII

When the speedometer in your 1985 Lincoln Mark VII is not working, it's a repair that you should make promptly. Though the vehicle itself can run well without a functioning speedometer, you run the risk of getting a speeding ticket, or getting in an accident because you do not know the speed at which you are traveling. When the speedometer stops working it is usually due to a speedometer cable that requires replacement.

Instructions

    • 1

Prevent electrical shock by removing the cable from the negative battery terminal. Place the cable off to the side.

    • 2

Disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission or the cruise control speed sensor adapter if your car is equipped with cruise control. If the car has cruise control it will have two speedometer cables. One will be located between the transmission and the adapter, the other will be connected to both the adapter and the speedometer housing.

    • 3

Work in the engine compartment to detach the cable from the routing clips. Pull the cable up just enough to provide slack to allow it to be disconnected from the speedometer.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the instrument cluster in place with a screwdriver. Pull the cluster out and then reach behind it to disconnect the speedometer cable from the back of the cluster. You can do this by pressing on the cable release clip with your fingers.

    • 5

Press a small amount of silicone grease into the speedometer opening before installing the new cable. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your vehicle is equipped with air bags, be sure to disconnect the negative battery cable, then the positive battery cable and wait two minutes before working near the impact sensors to prevent accidental deployment of the airbags.
