How to Adjust Andersen Casement Windows

Today, the Andersen casement is a popular type of window. They have a crank-out style and open by turning a knob. Over time, if these windows are not properly installed, they may need to be slightly adjusted to avoid damage to the hardware.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Open and close the sash by turning the crank clockwise to make sure the clearance and operation are good. Open the sash again and push the mushroom cam, located near the hinge on the inside of the sash. Push it up and down to make sure the hardware is properly locking.

  • Open the window again and adjust the mushroom cams with a 7/16-inch wrench. Tighten it around the mushroom cam and turn it one millimeter in either direction to tighten or loosen it. Turn it clockwise to decrease the sealing pressure of the window and counter-clockwise to tighten the sealing pressure.

  • Unscrew the strike located along the sill. The mushroom cam fits directly into the strike when the window closes. Place a piece of masking tape on the mushroom cam and shut the window. Check where the masking tape is marked and adjust the strike accordingly so the mushroom cam fits properly into it.

  • Screw the strike back into place and remove the masking tape. Shut the window once again. Check to see that the mushroom cam fits properly into the strike when the window is closed. Verify that all hardware is screwed down tight with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Check to make sure the roller, located just underneath the mushroom cam, is hitting the center of the run-up block when the window closes; the run-up block is next to the strike. Unscrew the run-up block and change its position if necessary to adjust the window.
