Handmade Sleeping Bags for Children
Children can use a sleeping bag many times during childhood, whether having a sleepover with cousins or a camping adventure out in the woods. Camping gear can be costly, especially knowing the child will outgrow it in a few short years. Learn to make a child's sleeping bag in the length and weight that best suits his needs.

1
Measure the child and determine the size sleeping bag you want to make. Make the bag large enough to accommodate a growing child. Compare your measurements to standard youth sleeping bag dimensions.
-
2
Wash and iron all of the fabric. Mark the fabric with fabric chalk to keep your lines straight and cut out the fabric pieces.

3
Pin the outside and lining pieces together with the right sides facing each other. Sew all of the edges together with a sewing machine, leaving a small, 2- to 3-inch section open. Flip the fabric right side out through the small opening. Sew the small opening shut with a sewing needle and thread.

4
Fold the sewn fabric in half, forming the shape of a sleeping bag, with the inside lining facing outward. Pin the zipper onto the sleeping bag. Unzip the zipper and sew it onto the bag using a sewing machine.

5
Turn the sleeping bag right-side out and press with an iron.

Tips & Warnings
For warmer sleeping bags, layer batting material between the outer fabric and lining before sewing them together.
You can use Velcro, ties or buttons instead of a zipper.
