How to Get More Drag Out of a Saltiga 6000 Spinning Reel

The Saltiga 6000 is a heavy-duty saltwater fishing reel manufactured by Daiwa. It is a high-end piece of angling equipment, with a price tag hovering around the $800 mark as of January 2011. For that kind of money, the Saltiga delivers stainless steel, bronze and titanium construction, with a sealed, water-resistant drag mechanism to reduce the risk that the monsters in the deep blue sea will strip or snap your fishing line. If you hook into a behemoth and need to get more drag out of the Saltiga, the setting control is on the top of the reel.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the front bracket of the Saltiga reel under the front shoe of the fishing rod so that the reel hangs below the rod and the spool faces toward the tip. Slip the rear shoe and locking nut at the butt of the rod over the rear bracket on the Saltiga, twisting the locking nut clockwise to secure the reel to the rod.

    • 2

Thread the fishing line from the Saltiga spool under the wire bail that encircles the top of the reel and up through each rod guide and out the tip of the rod.

    • 3

Twist the drag setting knob on the top of the Saltiga spool clockwise to tighten. Pull on the line after each drag adjustment to test the strength of the drag setting relative to the rated strength of your fishing line, such as 40 pound test. The line should come off the spool evenly and without jerking.

    • 4

Turn the knob clockwise again to get more drag out of the Saltiga, but below the breaking point of your fishing line. If the line snaps while you are tugging on the end, ease back on the drag setting.
