How to Make a Material Corsage

How to Make a Material Corsage thumbnail
Unlike fresh flower corsages, material corsages will not fade and die.

Material corsages can be used to replace fresh flower corsages. Unlike fresh flower corsages, material corsages will last over time and can be saved to remember a special occasion. Use fabrics such as satin, rayon, or tulle for more delicate corsages. Printed cotton can also be used to create colorful flowers for sturdier corsages. Material corsages can be designed to wear on the wrist or pinned to a shoulder. Create material corsages to give as gifts or to wear to a special event.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 4-inch-by-18-inch strip of fabric. Lay the strip on a flat surface. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together. Your strip should now be 2 inches by 18 inches. Press along the fold with a warm iron. Fold each shorter edge at a 45-degree angle to create a triangle on each end of the strip. Press these folds with a warm iron.

    • 2

Sew a 1/4-inch seam lengthwise along the matched edges with a sewing machine. Use long, loose stitches and leave a 6-inch length of thread at each end of the material.

    • 3

Pull gently on the bobbin thread to gather the material. Use your fingers to push the material along the thread and space the gathers evenly.

    • 4

Roll the strip into a spiral starting at one end. For a more open flower, roll the strip tighter. Hold the rolled strip by the edge with the seam. This edge will be the bottom of the flower, while the folded fabric edge will be the top. Pull gently along the folded edge to open up the flower. Use a needle and thread to sew the bottom edges of the flower together.

    • 5

Measure your wrist and cut a length of ribbon twice the size. Hot glue the fabric flower's bottom to the ribbon's center. Tie the ribbon in a bow around your wrist to wear your corsage. For a shoulder corsage, sew the flower to a broach pin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Group two or three fabric flowers onto the ribbon or pin to create a fuller corsage.
