How to Make a Blanket Robe

Snuggly, warm blankets with arms are popular these days. Add a simple tie and create a blanket robe that is both functional and fairly simple to make. Stay covered and warm under your cozy blanket while the convenient sleeves give you the freedom to use your hands to answer the phone or use the remote and the belt keeps the robe snug. Pick out your favorite fleece fabric, and in a few steps, you'll have a blanket robe for yourself or someone in your family. You don't even have to know how to sew.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your fleece fabric on a flat surface. Measure, mark and cut 24 inches off the bottom, short edge. Cut the 24-inch piece in half, giving you two 24-by-30-inch pieces. These are your sleeves.

    • 2

Fold each of the sleeves in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew or glue the seams shut, 1/2 inch from the edge, creating two 11-by-30-inch tubes. If you use fabric glue, allow your sleeves to dry overnight before attaching them to the armholes on the main fabric piece.

    • 3

Measure, mark and cut another 3-inch strip of fabric off the bottom, short edge of your fleece. This is the tie for your waist.

    • 4

Fold your main piece of fabric in half lengthwise and measure and mark your armholes. Make a 6-by-10-inch vertical oval, 14 inches down from the top and 12 inches in from the folded center. Cut out the oval through both layers of fabric, making two armholes.

    • 5

Turn the sleeve tubes right-side out, and line up the round end of each sleeve tube with the right side of the fleece around the rounded edge of each armhole oval and pin. Check the direction of the sleeve before attaching it to be sure that when you turn the robe right side out, the sleeve extends toward the outside of the robe. Sew or glue the seams together 1/2 inch from the edge. Repeat for the other sleeve. Trim any threads if sewing or let dry overnight if using glue.

    • 6

Turn the robe right side out, hiding seam edges. Try on the robe and wrap the tie around your waist. If the sleeves or tie is too long, trim to desired length.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fleece fabric doesn't ravel so you can leave the edges plain, trim the edges with decorative scalloped scissors or sew or glue a small hem.
