Working hard and being friendly can help you get on your boss's good side.

Bosses can be tough and demanding, but there are ways to get on your boss' good side. Getting the boss to like you is important to your career and can make all the difference when it comes time for cutbacks or promotions. Working hard is important, but so is building a friendly relationship with your boss, so don't neglect that key element of your job. Nobody likes working with difficult people, so being as friendly and helpful as you can is likely to encourage the boss to be nicer to you.

Pay attention to details. Returning phone calls promptly, always being on time, checking messages and responding to memos in a timely manner are a few good ways to get on your boss' good side. Neglecting the little stuff can make the work environment stressful for your boss. It will also give him the impression that you don't really care about your job.

Stay late. Staying later than your coworkers and your boss will re-enforce the image of you as a hard worker. Your boss may find it more difficult to criticize you if he sees how dedicated you are and how much time you devote to your job.

Ask your boss about himself. Even though your boss may be the unapproachable type, try to find a way to connect with him by asking him how he is doing or, perhaps, what college he attended. This will encourage him to see you in a more friendly light and will make it harder for him to be mean to you.

Be nice to you boss's spouse. Spouses are often unofficial advisers and persuading your boss' spouse to like you will help get your boss to like you as well. If you haven't met his spouse, introduce yourself and tell her how nice it is to meet her. Make it a point to always smile warmly, say hello and ask how she is doing when you see her..

Talk about common interests. Find something that you both have in common and bring it up in casual conversation. If you are both interested in sports, ask if he saw the big football game over the weekend. If he likes fishing, inquire if he's been fishing lately and if he can recommend a good fishing spot.

Work hard and be productive. Don't give your boss a reason to dislike you by slacking off, showing up late or missing deadlines. This will just add more stress to your boss' day and will give him something to hold against you.
