How to Tip a Doorman at Christmas

Doormen usually work at hotels and apartments. A doorman's duties include opening the door, helping you with your bags, working door security and cleaning. You should typically tip your doorman every once in a while to show your thanks, but what about a Christmas tip? You should give your doorman an extra tip for Christmas, but the amount depends on your finances and how much you usually tip him.

Instructions

1. Look at your finances. If you do not have enough to hand your doorman a large tip for Christmas, do not put your financial security in jeopardy. Your doorman is not going to think differently of you if you can only afford to give him an extra $5 for Christmas.

2. Consider how much you normally tip the doorman. If you normally tip him $10 per month, then giving a $40 or $50 tip for Christmas is certainly a generous gift. A good rule to go by is multiply what you normally tip the doorman for the month by three to five.

3. Place the money in a Christmas card. A card is not necessary, but it is a nice gesture. Write the doorman's name on the card and give it to him when you next see him. Thank him for everything he has done and wish him a Merry Christmas.

Tips & Warnings

• You should tip him more if he has been your doorman for more than two years and if he has helped you out more than usual in the past year. For example, a larger tip is in order if you recently remodeled and the doorman helped carry your packages or bags and opened doors through the entire process.
