How to Make PCBs With a Laser Cutter
Printed Circuit Boards or PCBs can be etched with precision laser cutters. The process of making a PCB starts with laying out the design using a PCB layout software. A print or plot file of the layout is made using the same software. These files can then be used to etch a PCB. The most commonly used method of etching a PCB is through chemical means. where one uses some chemicals to etch away the unwanted copper from the PCB. This method, however, is not very precise and is prone to shorts, especially if insulation distance between traces is very small. Laser PCB etching machines, on the other hand, can etch away the unwanted copper very precisely. Even though these etching machines are highly accurate, they are seldom used due to their high cost.

1
Design your PCB layout in the software of your choice. The best practice is to first draw the circuit schematic and then use the program to transfer the schematic to a PCB layout. You would still need to place the component manually and trace the connections, but the software will provide you with guide trace lines. Another advantage of this approach is that the software will help you detect any errors in the design on the layout.
-
2
Determine what format of print or plot file your PCB laser etching machine requires. Consult its operation manual or look through its help pages.
-
-
3
Make the appropriate print or plot file from your PCB layout software. You will have to read through the software's manual or help pages to understand the process of making such a file.
-
4
Transfer the print or plot file into your laser etching machine using a USB storage device. Newer laser etching machines can be connected to networks as well, in which case you can transfer the file from your computer directly into the machine.
-
5
Place a PCB board of appropriate size into the laser etching machine.
-
6
Launch the etching process by pressing the appropriate button on the etching machine.
