Concentrate on hard bone areas when shooting hollow-points.

Deer hunting is a popular activity throughout much of the United States. Most states have laws governing what you are allowed to hunt the animals with. There are seasons for shotguns, black powder and bow. Some states allow the use of hollow-point ammunition. When using a rim- or center-fire rifle for deer, it is usually advisable to use .243 or .270 rifles. By using a hollow-point shell in a .22, deer hunting is possible with the smaller caliber rifle.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the rifle with the .22 hollow-points, put on the hunting gear and keep the hunting license with you. Head out into the field and begin the hunt. Conduct the hunt by tracking the deer or set up in a blind and wait.

    • 2

Aim your shot for the chest and vital organs of the deer. Line the shot up and take the shot when the deer is in a clear and open area. Do not shoot if the deer is more than 20 yards away. The .22 rifle is a lower caliber rifle and does not have the power needed to drop the animal cleanly from long distances.

    • 3

Take the shot at the chest or vital organs. The hollow-point expands as it hits the deer blowing out the internal organs and killing the animal. Take the deer down with one shot, which will keep the meat free of adrenaline that taints the meat.

    • 4

Take another shot quickly at the haunches of the deer should the first shot not take it down clean.

Tips & Warnings

  • Conduct the hunt as you would with any rifle, but take your shot from a closer distance.
