How to Kill Head Lice with Alcohol

Submerge brushes and combs entirely in alcohol for an hour.

Using rubbing alcohol to kill an infestation and prevent the spread of head lice is one of several possible treatments. However, you should never apply alcohol directly to your hair or scalp. According to the KidsHealth website, to kill the head lice on your head doctors recommend using a cream rinse and medicated over-the-counter shampoo. Apply rubbing alcohol to combs, brushes, hats, helmets and other head-related items for seven to 10 days for extra protection against lice.

Things You'll Need

• Rubbing alcohol
• Small bucket
• Rag or cotton balls

Instructions

1. Soak grooming accessories such as brushes and combs in alcohol. Make sure the accessory is submersed fully in the alcohol for one hour in a small bucket. The rubbing alcohol will prevent the spread of head lice and kill any lice that remain on the accessories.

2. Dab a cotton ball or rag with rubbing alcohol and wipe potentially infected headgear such as hats and helmets. Rub the alcohol over the entire surface of the headgear.

3. Continue to monitor all grooming accessories and headgear for recurrence of head lice. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to prevent future outbreaks.
