Below the shoulder, simple bangs and no layers make this a perfect wig for this project.

Select a wig. The wig should be red, fall at least two inches below the shoulder, and have little or no layering or feathering.

    • 2

Groom the wig. Place the wig on your head, or on the head of a friend or family member who will be your prep model or on a wig form. Pin into place securely and brush the wig.

    • 3

Set out all of your supplies. The best place to prepare your wig is in a bathroom or at a vanity where there is counter space and a mirror. Tape the photo of Pebbles on the mirror in a corner that won't interfere with watching your work with the wig. If you are using the curling iron, plug it in and set it to an appropriate heat for your wig.

    • 4

Cut the ponytail. Using the comb and the scissors, comb the ponytail straight up and, holding the section in between your middle and forefingers, cut the ponytail until it is 6 inches long.

    • 5

Add fringe to the ponytail ends. Hold the ponytail between your middle and forefingers, leaving an inch of the hair end standing above your fingers. Take the shears and hold them perpendicular to your fingers with the points of the scissors pointing downwards. Snip the ends of the ponytai, keeping the scissors pointing downwards and leaving long and short strands.

    Styling the Wig

    • 6

Pull the wig into a high pony tail. With one hand, hold the base of the pony tail on top of the head. With the other hand, brush or comb the hair, ensuring that the scalp is smooth and tight. Take an elastic and secure the pony tail.

    • 7

Separate the bangs. If the wig has bangs, allow them to fall onto the forehead. Otherwise, using the comb, carefully pull out a 4-5" wide section of hair, at most, 1/4" deep, along the forehead/hairline, using the comb. If separating bangs causes bumps in the hair around the pony tail, smooth with the comb.

    • 8

Set the bone. Using your fingers, split the ponytail into two sections with one half in the front and the other half in the back. Flop the front half of the ponytail forward. With one hand, hold the back half of the ponytail and place the bone at the base of the ponytail in between each half section of the hair. With the other hand, take the front half of the hair and drape it over the front of the bone. Make sure that the ponytail sits evenly on the head. With the second hair elastic, pull the ponytail back into place. Brush the ponytail smooth again.

    • 9

Fringe the ponytail ends. Hold the ponytail section in one hand leaving 1-2" of hair at the end. Holding the scissors point down, perpendicular to your fingers, cut the hair from one end to the other. Using this technique, you'll find you create "points" in the hair ends.

    • 10

Split the ponytail into two halves. Comb one half and spray lightly with hairspray. Blow dry the ponytail or simply allow the hairspray to dry. Repeat with the other half.

    • 11

Tease the base of each ponytail half. Hold one half of the ponytail in one hand and, using the hair comb, brush small strokes down from the middle of the ponytail downward towards the bone and the base of the ponytail. This will create a small "nest" of hair and create volume. Repeat with the other half of the ponytail.

    • 12

(Optional) Curl the ends of the hair. Comb and lightly spray each half of the ponytail. Allow the hairspray to dry. Use the curling iron and wrap the ends of one half of the ponytail on the curling iron and curl until only the last 2 inches of the hair is curled. Hold and set for a minute or two and then remove the curling iron. Repeat with the end of the other half of the ponytail. Allow to cool down completely.

    • 13

Smooth and finish the ponytail, allowing the ends to slip and part away from one another. Spray the ponytail in place and make sure that the teasing and hairspray hold the vertical shape.

    • 14

Shape the bangs. Comb the front section of hair downwards towards the chin and spray. Part the bangs into 3 sections. Cut the center section creating a long "V" with the long point falling between the eyes and the short ends nearly meeting the hairline. Cut the side sections at an angle, with the longest point of the angle sitting just below the ear lobe along the jawbone and the shortest point just above the temple. Spray into place and comb smooth.

Tips & Warnings

  • When selecting your wig, synthetic, vibrant red hair will provide a cartoon-like result. Human hair that is more of an auburn or natural red hair color will give a realistic, live-action result.

  • Be careful not to pull out too many hair strands while combing or brushing the wig. Unlike living hair, once you've pulled a hair out, it will not grow back and you can thin out the wig's volume.

  • When choosing the curling iron's heat setting, be aware that synthetic hair cannot withstand high heat, whereas human hair can.

  • Do not use curling irons without the supervision of an adult.

  • Be sure not to touch the curling iron with your bare hands, your face or your model's face.
