How to Make a Tornado With Water Bottles

Make a tornado using recyclables.

If you are putting together a science project featuring weather patterns and climate distinctions, you can make it more exciting by including a hands-on experiment. Make a model of a tornado using materials that can be found around a kitchen, like water bottles and food coloring. Once the tornado model is finished, people can see what a real tornado looks like in nature.

Things You'll Need

• Food coloring
• Duct tape

Instructions

1. Fill a third of a 2-liter water bottle with water.

2. Add in three to four drops of food coloring.

3. Place another 2-liter water bottle on top of the first, lining up the openings.

4. Tape around the openings using duct tape to secure the bottles. Run your hands around the tape to ensure no water escapes.

5. Turn the water bottles upside-down, which will cause the water to cyclone down into the bottom tube in a tornado.
