How to Dive With Night Vision

How to Dive With Night Vision thumbnail
Scuba diving is a buddy sport.

Night dives are fun and risky. Night diving requires special training to prepare divers for meeting dangerous sea creatures like Lion Fish and Sharks. Weather must be good to reduce the risk of night diving. Good weather means good visibility. Not only do divers wear a torch when night diving, but they also wear a special night-vision mask. The night-vision mask helps divers see restricted areas marked specifically for night divers. The mask also helps night divers see exit points colored with various lights for easy detection.

Instructions

    • 1

Read up on night vision. It takes a minimum of 15 minutes for eyes to adjust to low light.

    • 2

Dim your torch light when kitting up for a night dive. Your eyes will adjust to low light in the time it takes you to suit up.

    • 3

Test two torches before the night dive. Always put new batteries in both torches before diving. Black out the torch light by putting your hand over the headlight.

    • 4

Learn the torch signals for night diving. Always make a signal with your torch on the seabed and not directed at your diving buddy.

    • 5

Check the location of your buddy routinely. A buddy check is more than seeing if your diving partner is near. A true buddy check is a thorough checking of equipment and gauges.

Tips & Warnings

  • Search the dive site with a torch to make sure no one left equipment behind.

  • Don't turn your torch off underwater. The bulb may blow when you turn the torch back on.
