How to Reduce Cauliflower Ear

"Cauliflower ear" refers to the excessive swelling of the outer ear, which grows to resemble a stalk of cauliflower, following a blunt-force injury. Commonly associated with high-impact sports such as boxing, wrestling, football or rugby, cauliflower ear can be very painful and may cause temporary hearing loss in the affected ear. Although measures can be taken to reduce the swelling and inflammation associated with this condition, drainage and subsequent stitching of the ear by a physician is usually necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply pressure to the affected ear immediately after impact. Wrap your hand in a soft towel and push firmly against the ear.

    • 2

Prepare a cold compress (an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables) and place it over the ear. Along with applied pressure, the cold temperature prevents excessive swelling and restricts blood flow to the area.

    • 3

Take a dose of ibuprofen. Refer to the bottle's label to determine the recommended dosage for your age. Ibuprofen helps reduce inflammation.

    • 4

Consult your physician as soon as possible. Having the ear quickly drained of any collected fluid will reduce your chances of disfigurement and alleviate pain. If the cartilage of your ear must be stitched, keep the ear clean, and avoid participating in any physical activity until the stitches have been removed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid cauliflower ear by wearing proper head protection, such as wrestling or boxing masks and padded helmets, when participating in high-impact sports.

  • Never attempt to drain or stitch your ears yourself, or allow a family member or friend to try. You may cause yourself serious injury, or an infection, by doing so.
