How to Get Rid of Head Lice Permanently

Head lice does not have to be an ongoing problem.

Head lice can be a serious concern. Other than the intense discomfort, itching and irritation that is associated with head lice, it can also spread very quickly, particularly around small children. To help prevent spreading, do not share any items with an infected person, including clothing, linens or towels, until the treatment process is complete, and you're sure that you have gotten rid of the head lice. A series of stages is necessary to permanently get rid of head lice.

Things You'll Need

• Pediculicide
• Nit comb
• Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

1. Wash all of the clothes, linens and bedding that the infested person came into contact with in water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Wash these items two days before treating the infested person directly.

2. Vacuum all the floors in your household to make sure there are not any remaining lice. Do this before and after treatment.

3. Obtain head lice medication called pediculicide. There are over the counter and prescription options.

4. Cover the infected person's head, scalp and hair with the medication. Follow the instructions carefully. Let it sit for several minutes or for as long as the package indicates.

5. Check the hair of the infested person eight to 12 hours after treatment. Comb it using a nit comb, which will remove the lice eggs and dead lice.

6. Retreat after a period of nine days or when the medication your used recommends. This will ensure all the lice are killed permanently.

Tips & Warnings

• Hair should not be washed or conditioned directly before treatment and for one to two days afterward.
