DIY Floating Halo Costume

DIY Floating Halo Costume thumbnail
Use gold for a traditional representation of a halo.

A floating halo costume consists of a halo and angel wings. This costume is useful at Halloween, Christmas or even just for a small girl to wear during play around the house. The floating halo costume can be worn with any dress or any other outfit. While making a halo costume you will be using spray paint, so be sure you have access to a well ventilated area. There are many different kinds of wings, and there are many colors of halos to choose from. It is a good idea to find pictures of angel costumes, and ask the wearer which style they like best before you begin.

Instructions

  1. Make Your Floating Halo

    • 1

Make a round halo shape from your craft wire using your hands to gently tug and press. Do not try to make the circle perfect, because the garland will cover the wire. Be sure the resulting halo is the size you desire for the completed halo.

    • 2

Overlap the wire 3 to 4-inches. Bend the wire to go down to the headband by grasping the wire firmly with the needle nosed pliers and rotate your wrist straight down. Allow 2 inches of wire between the halo and the headband.

    • 3

Wrap the craft wire in a tight coil around the head band. Make the coil tight by pulling the wire firmly around with the needle nosed pliers. Wrap the wire to opposite side of the head band.

    • 4

Attach the right side of the halo to the right side of the head band with the craft wire. Allow 2 inches of room between the halo and the headband and attach the wire already coiled on the headband to the right side of the halo. Coil the craft wire four times around the halo, cut the excess wire and then press the remaining end of the wire firmly against the halo.

    • 5

Wrap the halo in gold holiday garland. Secure the remaining end of the garland with the beginning end of the garland by tying in a double knot. Cut the excess ends of garland off, or make a bow of garland over the loose ends.

    Make Your Angel Wings

    • 7

Draw the angel wing shapes on a piece of cardboard. They should be a length that will come approximately from the top of your head to just below the waist. Cut the wings out with scissors.

    • 8

Punch holes for your ribbon ties. Make a hole in the top of each wing where the shoulder will be, and another hole 3 inches above that on each wing. Punch a hole at the bottom of each wing where the waist will be.

    • 9

Spray paint the wings gold on both sides in a well ventilated area. Allow the wings to dry completely.

    • 10

Thread the gold ribbon through the top holes in each wing, then thread them back to the front through the holes 3 inches below. Place the wings on your back, and lay each side of ribbon on the corresponding shoulder. Crisscross the ribbon across your chest, then thread each ribbon through the front of the corresponding bottom holes.

Bring the ribbon ends back to the front of your waist and tie a bow, cutting off excess ribbon when finished. Wear your completed floating halo costume with an all white outfit. Apply gold glitter to your hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can substitute the gold spray paint with acrylic reflective metallic paint. You can also substitute the color of the garland and ribbon to match.

  • You can use metallic acrylic craft paint with a paintbrush if you do not want to use spray paint.

  • Always use spray paint in a well ventilated area as the fumes are toxic when inhaled.

  • Keep fingers safely away from the wire cutter blades during use.
