How to Upgrade a Vehicle's Tow Package
A tow package refers to all the components of a vehicle associated with towing -- the hitch, electrical connectors, as well as the drivetrain, brakes and transmission. Different vehicles, makes, models and trim packages come with different towing packages. The tow package should be robust enough to easily handle the needs of the driver. If it does not, then upgrades to the package may be in order. The easiest way to upgrade a towing package is to change the towing package option to a better one before the vehicle is purchased. However, other options do exist.

Research available options. It is significantly easier to just buy a vehicle that has the required towing capacity rather than upgrading it after the fact. Most vehicle manufactures will have trim models. These different trim models will likely have upgraded towing packages. In addition, check out the towing capacity for vehicles by other brands as well. The towing package relies on some core components of the vehicle, such as the engine. Selecting one built for the job ensures that every component of the vehicle is designed to handle the load.

Install an after market towing electrical package. Older vehicles may not have the electrical connectors that newer trailers do. Fortunately, after market electrical connectors exist. These small inexpensive units are connected to the vehicle's electrical system. This process is different depending on the model, but most are easily installed. The unit has an electrical connector port that connects to the electrical harness of the trailer's hitch. This allows even older trucks to work with newer trailers.

Upgrade components. In order to upgrade the towing package of an existing vehicle, several of the parts of that vehicle will need to be changed. The vehicle may require a stronger transmission and drivetrain. It will definitely require more power. This can be achieved by adding performance parts to the engine or by replacing the existing engine with a more powerful one. The suspension and brakes will most certainly need to be upgraded to accommodate the increased load. In addition, the owner may want to look at new hitches and after market towing packages. If one of these components is weak then towing a larger load may not be safe.
