Instructions

    • 1

Remove any materials that have severe water damage. This includes linens and other fabrics, upholstery, dry wall, insulation and ceiling tiles. You will likely need to discard these soft, porous materials.

    • 2

Tear up carpeting that has been severely damaged by flood waters. The padding underneath likely has mold damage, which can make it smell.

    • 3

Replace appliances and mechanical systems that were submerged in water. This includes larger appliances like your furnace.

    • 4

Run dehumidifiers and large fans to help circulate the air in your home and dry things up. Also, open up windows and doors during the day. This will go a long way in helping to reduce the smell of the flood.

    • 5

Scrub down all other surfaces, such as hard surfaces, or carpeting that was not severely damaged, with a mold inhibitor. This will kill existing mold and help prevent new mold from forming.
