How to Use Whey in Foods

Dieters and bodybuilders seeking to increase protein levels may choose to add whey protein to their daily diet. Whey comes from cow's milk during the process of making cheese. After the cheese forms curds and the ingredients separate, whey is the liquid that results. Manufacturers remove the liquid from the whey proteins and package it as a powder. Use whey in foods by adding the powder to a variety of foods. Does this Spark an idea?

      Pour 8 oz. of a beverage into a glass or cup. Measure 2.5 tbsp. of whey powder into different beverages such as coffee, tea, juice or other chilled drinks. Stir the beverage well to dissolve the whey. You may notice the drink color look lighter after adding the whey.

      Add 1/3 cup whey powder to 8 oz. milk or water and stir well to dissolve the whey.

      Pour cold cereal into a bowl and add 2.5 tbsp. of whey over the top of the cereal. Make up hot cereal, pour it into a bowl and sprinkle 1.5 tbsp. of whey over the top. Add milk.

      Add 1 tbsp. of whey powder to peanut butter, mayonnaise, dips or cream cheese and mix well. The whey boosts the protein content of these spreadable toppings.

      Sprinkle 2.5 tbsp. whey over warm spaghetti sauce or soup and stir well before eating.

      Add 1/3 cup of powdered whey to baked recipes such as muffins, cookies or quick breads. Stir in the whey along with the other dry ingredients.

  • Add powdered whey right before serving warm foods.

  • You may notice textures of baked goods becoming slightly drier.

  • One serving of whey protein powder (1 scoop -- 22 g or about 1.5 tbsp.) contains 20 g of protein.
