Technology develops at such a rapid pace that older devices, such as VHS players, can be forgotten, along with the memories recorded on those devices. Luckily, video converter devices exist to simplify the process. Elgato Video Capture is a high-quality VHS-to-DVD converter created with Macs in mind. The general cost on this converter is less than $100 dollars.

      Connect the red, yellow and white RCA cable to your VHS player. Standard VHS players have the three connectors for the RCA cable in the rear of the device, typically near the power cord.

      Attach the RCA stereo cable plugs to the Elgato Video Capture hardware device. The RCA stereo cable and Elgato Video Capture device hardware come standard with Video Capture by Elgato, so they will work and fit correctly.

      Connect the Elgato Video Capture device to the MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. The connector from the Elgato is a USB plug. You'll need an empty USB port on your computer, which is standard on all MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo's and is located on the side of your MacBook Pro.

      Install the Elgato Video Capture software. Insert the disc into your MacBook Pro and click the "Install" button from the pop-up menu that will automatically appear. Allow your MacBook Pro to install the software.

      Insert the blank DVD disc into your MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo. The MacBook Pro will tell you if it is not a blank DVD disc.

      Open the iMovie or iTunes program. Open the file you saved from your VHS player. Burn the VHS movie file onto the blank DVD disc.

Tips & Warnings

  • Let the Elgato Video Capture complete the recording from the VHS device. It can take up to a few hours, so let it fully run its course.
