Ginseng has been used for its medical benefits for nearly 2,000 years. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, clinical evidence suggests that ginseng may help diabetics control blood sugar and may help the body fight colds and infections. Two species of ginseng are commonly used; American ginseng (panax quinquefolius) and Asian ginseng (panax ginseng). Most ginseng consumed in the United States is the Asian variety imported from Korea. You can buy fresh ginseng root at some specialty grocers or you may order it online and have it delivered.   • Ginseng root
  • Pot or kettle
  • Cup
  • Honey

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut the ginseng root into thin slices with a sharp knife.

      Bring water to a boil in a pot or kettle.

    • 3

      Put three to five ginseng slices in the cup. Use fewer slices if you prefer weaker tea, or more slices if you prefer stronger tea.

      Remove the pot or kettle from the heat and carefully fill the cup with water.

      Steep the slices for at least five minutes. Sweeten with honey if desired.
