How to Measure the Foot for Socks on Circular Needles

How to Measure the Foot for Socks on Circular Needles thumbnail
All you need is a measuring tape to measure a foot for socks knitted on circulars.

There is little difference between the finished product for socks knitted on circular needles and those knitted on double pointed needles, so measuring the foot for socks knitted on circulars will be exactly the same process as the measurements for double pointed needles. Measuring is critical for sock projects, as even a difference of 1/4 inch can make a sock uncomfortably tight or loose. Take accurate measurements for the best possible fit for your socks.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the ankle. The sock will need to slide over the widest part of the ankle so that the wearer can easily remove them and put them on. Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of the ankle, generally over the protruding ankle bones.

    • 2

Determine the width of the calf. For knee socks and other socks with tall "legs," measure around the part of the calf where the sock will end. You will need this measurement to determine how many stitches will need to be increased to accommodate the wearer's leg. Socks that are too tight around the calf can be uncomfortable.

    • 3

Measure for the heel flap. Some sock patterns require knitters to measure around the foot from the tip of the heel to the spot where the foot and leg meet. This measurement can be used to determine the depth of the heel in some sock patterns. Other sock patterns might not require this measurement.

    • 4

Measure the length of the foot. Have the wearer stand on the measuring tape and note how long the foot is from the toe to the back of the heel. Standing up can be important as the dimensions of the foot can change when pressure is placed on the sole.

    • 5

Measure the foot's circumference. If you are improvising a sock pattern or changing an existing one, you'll need to find and measure the widest part of the foot, so that you can increase the appropriate number of stitches if you are knitting from the toe-up or decrease if knitting from the top down.
