How to Install a Thule Roof Top Cargo Carrier

Save

Thule is a Swedish company that manufactures and sells recreational vehicle accessories, towing systems and rooftop cargo carriers. Many vehicles have a roof rack, but the problem is securing items to the rack and keeping them safe from the elements. A Thule rooftop carrier solves this problem by providing a weather-resistant, enclosed container to transport your items. Attaching the Thule carrier to your roof rack should take just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Helper
  • Adjust the bars on your roof rack so that they are 23 5/8 inches wide. If your bars will not adjust that wide, adjust them to their widest setting. Skip this step if your roof rack bars are not adjustable.

  • Use a helper and lift the carrier to the top of the vehicle. Lower the carrier onto the roof rack bars. Slide the carrier back and forth lengthwise as needed so that the mounting holes in the base of the carrier line up with the roof rack bars.

  • Push a flat rubber mounting pad to the bottom of a carrier mounting bracket until it is fully seated. Lift up the red safety release tab on a bracket, then rotate the blue handle counterclockwise. Repeat for all four brackets.

  • Open up the lid of the carrier. Push a bracket into its mounting holes in the bottom floor of the carrier with the U-bolt facing downwards until it snaps into place. Make sure the red tab on the bracket faces the rear of the carrier.

  • Slide the carrier around as needed to position the brackets over the roof rack bars. Rotate the U-bolt under a bracket so that it is at the underside of the roof rack bar. Push the U-bolt upwards into the bracket until the bolt is snug against the underside of the roof rack bar. Repeat for all brackets.

  • Rotate the blue handle on each bracket clockwise until it stops, then push the red tab down.

  • Peel the backing off a black circular hole cover and press it firmly over any exposed hole in the bottom of the carrier. Repeat for all exposed holes.

Tips & Warnings

  • All parts mentioned in this installation should come with your Thule rooftop carrier. If you are missing any parts, check with the manufacturer.
  • Mount the rooftop carrier as far back from the front of the vehicle as possible to minimize wind resistance. When doing this, make sure the carrier clears your vehicle's lift gate when it is in the open position.
