Chess can be enjoyed on your computer.

Chess is one of the oldest games in Western civilization, and it's only natural that it should be playable digitally. Dozens of chess games are available for computers, and you can be download and play them directly from your hard drive or across the Internet. Some computer chess games pit you against dastardly artificial intelligence (AI), while others allow you to play against other human gamers. The only trick to playing a chess game on your computer is finding the right program for your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on the "Start" button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen and then select "Games." Click on "Chess Titans" and play right in Windows Vista or Windows 7. To move the chess pieces, click on them and then click on one of the highlighted tiles. The program automatically determines which moves are legal and which moves are not. For instance, you cannot move a rook diagonally in "Chess Titans" or in a real-world game.

Download and install a chess program that can be played off-line, such as "Ruffian" or "Crafty." In particular, "Crafty" is noteworthy for being open-source and for having the largest database of opening moves. Once you've installed a chess program to your computer, double-click its icon and play it whenever you like, regardless of whether or not you're online.
