How to Learn Latin Romantic Languages
Romance languages are commonly offered to high school students. There are eight romance languages, all based on Latin. The eight languages in current use are Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Occitan, Sardinian and Romanian. The romance languages began as adaptations of vulgar Latin and spread to their own languages adapted to each specific land and people. Learning a romance language requires finding a place and opportunity to practice and hear the language in use.

1
Choose the romance language you wish to learn. Your language choice will depend on personal information. If you know a person who speaks a romance language, choosing to learn the same language will provide opportunity to practice with a friend. If you are traveling to a romance language-speaking country, learn travel terms in that language. Another method to choose a romance language is to consider your environment. Certain areas of America and Canada are heavier in Spanish or French speakers than any other romance language.

2
Obtain software or websites that will help with the language acquisition. Websites such as byki.com offer free language downloads where users can hear and see foreign phrases or words and learn grammar or sentence structure. Software such as Rosetta Stone is available to language learners. Make sure the software or website chosen offers the romance language desired.

Find a local college or organization offering romance language classes. Many community colleges will offer shorter classes or night courses for those not interested in a full college education. Outreach programs such as BOCES of New York State will also offer foreign language classes.
