Seventies fashions offer a lot to select from when you are making your own costumes. Disco and hippie costumes with the big platform shoes have been overdone. Try thinking outside the box and find something that screams '70s in a unique fashion. Whatever '70s style you choose, remember that hair made a big statement that decade. You may be able to browse through grandmother's photos to get some authentic ideas. Vintage shops could end up being your best friend. Just add a groovy attitude and you are far out, man.
Things You'll Need
- Hot pants
- Knee-high boots
- Tunic top
- Linen pants
- Gold chain
- Hoop earrings
- Mood ring
Create hot pants by cutting off a pair of old pants, or browse through vintage shops for a pair. They were the ticket for women in the '70s. Add a matching vest, and wear a billowy sleeved blouse underneath. Tie a scarf around your hair and don a pair of knee-high boots, and Nancy Sinatra is in the room.
Dress that man up in a tunic top or peasant shirt or gown. These are unisex, and you may be able to find one at a vintage shop or tucked away in grandmother's closet. Look for some old linen pants to wear underneath, rather than jeans, to give it a more ethnic look versus the tired hippie look. For footwear, sandals complete the look. Remember the Beatles, and all you need is love.
Fix your hair to compliment the outfit you wear. Yes, women wore it straight and close to the head, but they also wore it flipped up around the face, thanks to Farrah Fawcett. Even businessmen in the '70s let their hair grow over their collars, so if you have a shaved head, wear a wig. Think like Mr. Brady, and try an Afro wig.
Finish off your '70s look with makeup. Women did go extremes during this time period, from all-natural to lots of eye makeup. Stepping out the door with hot pants calls for some flashy blue eye shadow, which was very popular at the time. Apply thick eye liner to the upper lid. Keep your lips and cheeks bare.
Accessorize with a mood ring; both men and women wore them. For women, add a pair of big loop earrings to go with your hot pants. Tie a scarf or a long gold chain around your neck, or wear both.
