Bottled bleach can temporarily raise your pool's chlorine levels.

Commercial, bottled bleach will raise your pool's chlorine levels temporarily, similar to the way pool shock treatments work. Before you add bleach or any other chemicals to a pool, you should always test the water so you know how much of any given chemical you need to add. Water test kits for pools are available at all pool supply shops, some home improvement stores and online. Always use caution when handling bleach because it is dangerous to skin and eyes. Instructions

    • 1

Use a water test kit to determine how much bleach you will need for your pool. Follow the instructions included with the kit to get a reading of the chlorine level in the pool. The water needs to be between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm). Check your pool's manual to determine its size.

    • 2

Calculate how much bleach you will need to add to the water based on the size of the pool and the current chlorine level. One gallon of bleach will raise the chlorine level in a 30,000-gallon pool by about 1 ppm. If your pool is 30,000 gallons and its current chlorine level is 1 ppm, add 1 or 2 gallons of bleach.

    • 3

Dilute the bleach before adding it into the pool. Pour the bleach into a large container and add 3 parts water for every 1 part of bleach. If you are adding 2 gallons of bleach, mix it with 6 gallons of water before adding it to the pool.

    • 4

Turn on your pool's pump and filter before adding any chemicals to the water. Slowly pour the diluted bleach into the pool. If the container is too heavy to lift, use a cup to transfer the solution from the container to the pool until you can lift it comfortably. Wait about five hours before using the pool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bleach with sodium hypochlorite is more effective for swimming pools, according to the website Pool Calculator.

  • Never add undiluted bleach to a pool because it may eat away at the pool liner.
