The 2002 Volkswagen Passat equipped with a 1.8T engine has an oil pump mounted in the oil sump on the bottom of the engine. If this pump goes, the engine won't get lubricated, which could cause the engine to seize and fail. If you think your oil pump is failing, replace it with a new one as soon as possible.
Things You'll Need
- Jack stands
- Drain pan
- 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
Park the Passat on a level area and set the parking brake. Lift the front of the Passat using a jack. Place the jack stands underneath the jack points on the side of the Volkswagen.
Put a drain pan under the oil pan. Unbolt the drain plug on the pan with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and empty the engine oil into the pan.
Unbolt the oil pan from the bottom of the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Pull the oil pan down off the engine, then put it to the side. Unbolt the baffle plate on the bottom of the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Unbolt the drive sprocket on the front of the engine from the oil pump with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Take the sprocket and chain off of the engine.
Unbolt the suction pipe on the bottom of the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the oil pump from the bottom of the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets, then pull it down and away from the engine.
