The turn signal switch in an Oldsmobile is integrated with a multi-function switch that is responsible for operating your windshield wipers, cruise control, light dimmers and your turn signal. When one component on this switch fails it is time to replace the whole unit. Replacing the unit will not take very much time.

Removing the Turn Signal Switch

Step 1

Open the hood for access to the battery. Disconnect the battery's positive and negative terminals.

Step 2

Remove the steering wheel shroud assembly. This is the plastic wrapped around the steering column. The housing is held by Phillips head screws.

Step 3

Twist the turn signal lever forward and pull it out. Put it in a safe place for later installation.

Step 4

Disconnect the wiring harness from the back of the switch. The wires can be removed by pulling the tabs on the side of the connector and pulling until they're free from the switch.

Step 5

Unscrew the two screws holding the switch in place. The multi-switch is ready to be removed.

Installing the Turn Signal Switch

Step 1

Screw the new switch to the steering column with a Phillips head screwdriver. Ensure the switch is tight against the column.

Step 2

Plug the wiring harness into the switch. Push the connector in until it clicks in place.

Step 3

Attach the lever to the switch. Push the lever into the switch and twist toward the front of the vehicle.

Step 4

Cap the steering column with the shroud covers. Screw the shroud back together with a Phillips head screwdriver.

Step 5

Reconnect the battery by installing the battery terminals. Test the multi-switch by checking each function to ensure it is installed correctly.
