How to Use a MOSFET Amplifier

Use a MOSFET Amplifier

Amplifiers that take advantage of Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect transistors, better known as MOSFET Amplifiers, are gaining in popularity as their cost continues to fall. While a number of factors are important in determining overall amplifier performance, MOSFET amplifiers are generally better at providing amplified mid- and high-range frequencies than other types of amplifiers. Consequently, MOSFET amplifiers are the amplifiers of choice when an amplifier is required for powering mid-range and full-range speakers and tweeters in a car.

Things You'll Need

  • MOSFET amplifier
  • Speakers
  • Speaker wire
  • Ground wire
  • Power wire
  • Remote turn on wire
  • RCA cables

Instructions

    • 1

Install the MOSFET amplifier by connecting the power, ground and remote turn on wires to the appropriate inputs on the amplifier. Plug in the RCA cables to their appropriate inputs on the amplifier and then connect the speaker wires to the positive and negative terminals on the speakers. Connect the speaker wires to the positive and negative speaker terminals on the amplifier.

    • 2

Choose appropriate speakers for the MOSFET amplifier to power. While MOSFET amplifiers are more "musical" than their counterparts, it is still necessary to properly pair the amplifier with proper speakers. Connecting the MOSFET amplifier to a subwoofer will negate the audio quality advantage the amplifier has over traditional amplifiers. Refer to the amplifier's owner's manual for the specific RMS power figures in order to properly select a set of full range speakers capable of handling the power produced by the amplifier. Further, ensure that the speakers do not have a high sensitivity rating, as MOSFET amplifiers produce generous amounts of power.

    • 3

Adjust the high-pass settings on the MOSFET amplifier, as well as the gain setting. If full-range speakers are connected to the amplifier, the high-pass filter should be enabled to ensure that only mid and high frequencies will be played through the speakers. The gain should be slowly turned up until the speakers begin to distort. After distortion occurs, the gain should be lowered to a point just before the distortion point.
